THE AGRICULTURE OF EDO & TOKYO Shinagawa Negi and Kabu
Facing to Edo Bay, the people here in Shinagawa lived on fishing and farming.
Negi (welsh onion) was introduced to Edo during 1573-1529 by the settlers from Osaka district. Its culture started in and around Shinagawa post town and won the brand name ‘Shinagawa Negi’. The record around 1804 describes of the Shinagawa Kabu (turnip) which was grown for preserved food in winter. The center of vegetable production gradually moved to Oi and Osaki areas.
